Park Florist joins the growing sustainable business community in Takoma Park choosing emission-free wind energy as the next step in environmental stewardship and sustainable floristry and floral design.
Takoma Park, MD – Park Florist is pleased to announce that they have committed to purchasing 100% local wind energy credits to power their business, reducing the carbon footprint of the shop and helping to cultivate a healthier community. This means that their customers can rest easy knowing that by supporting Park Florist they are also supporting clean energy, sustainable floral design, the local green economy, local air and water quality and increasing the renewable energy infrastructure.
Wind energy is making a big difference in America. The wind energy that Park Florist uses fosters the development of new wind energy and protects air quality.
“It was a natural move for us,” Jeanne Ha, CFD, says, “when our sales agent (and part-time designer / business development consultant) Jared Hughes told us that we could save money and help the environment, it was a no brainer. We signed up right then and there.”
The effects of their commitment are immense, and are a part of Park Florist’s mission to foster a cleaner environment. By using wind energy, Park Florist is helping the environment, and also keeping the air clean, preventing the need for new, polluting fossil fuel power plants to meet growing energy needs.
Jeanne’s husband and business manager, Dennis Ha, was impressed with the numbers. “We learned that in addition to being cheaper, by switching to 100% wind, we could have the effect of taking 3.5 cars off the road, transferring 26,219 kilowatts of polluting “brown” coal-fired power to clean wind which over the next year will effectively eliminate 19 metric tons of C02 from the atmosphere from Park Florist alone! It’s amazing what one small business can do to make a big positive impact on the environment. The best part is, our customers love it because they want to use a “green” florist!”
Thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses have purchased CleanSteps Local Windpower from Washington Gas Energy Services and are doing their part to prevent the harmful effects of traditional energy.
Park Florist has been in the Ha family for two generations spanning 35+ years. This carries on a tradition of a florist at this location for more than a century. Owner Jeanne Ha, CFD, believes strongly in sustainable floristry and chooses certified organically grown flowers from local farms and wholesalers that are committed to protecting the environment and sustainable growing practices whenever possible. Park Florist also recycles hundreds of pounds of cardboard each month and uses compact florescent bulbs and energy-star rated coolers in their showroom.
"Look for this label on fresh cut
flowers and potted plants to know you are buying products that meet
America's most comprehensive sustainability standard."

...from Seed to Store
Park Florist is committed to working with
Veriflora certified farmers, distributors, wholesalers whenever possible. Our Veriflora vendors are committed to delivering only the highest quality products, produced with rigorous environmental accountability while at the same time addressing
the health and well-being of workers, their families and communities.
How Can You Be Sure?
Certification is conducted by SCS, a recognized neutral third party
with no vested interest in the companies or products it evaluates or
certifies. This independence is vital to ensure that the certification
standards are enforced fully and fairly. The certification process
involves detailed on-site inspections, document audits, in-depth
interviews, and annual follow-up.
Park Florist is committed to
recycling our organic waste. Every day we receive dozens of large cardboard boxes filled with fresh cut flowers
that have been shipped to us from around the word directly from the growers
and our wholesale partners. These boxes are broken down and flattened and placed in a dumpster dedicated to recycled cardboard.
Each day as we cut stems and peel off greens to make our award-winning designs, we collect several 50 gallon trash barrels of green trimmings
each day. The City of Takoma Park collects that waste each Monday and takes it to the organic waste to our municipal mulch pile to be turned into soil
amendment and organic fertilizer. Keeping floral trimmings out of the landfill saves valuable space and allows nature to reduce those
trimmings into basic organic material. 75% of Park Florist’s solid waste — about 31,000 lbs each year — is leaves, branches and stems.
Park Florist has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on The Green Power Partnership which is a voluntary program that supports the organizational procurement of green power by offering expert advice, technical support, tools and resources. Partnering with the EPA has helped Park Florist lower the transaction costs of buying green power, reduce our carbon footprint, and communicate our leadership to floral customers.
Green power is electricity produced from a subset of renewable resources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Buying green power is the easiest and most effective way Park Florist has improved our environmental performance.
